September-2001: Zee English, the channel that brings you some of the greatest serials and soap operas from the West, will now telecast movie hits from around the world. PICTURE THIS will bring to its viewers a special movie every last Sunday of every month at 10pm.

The first of these movies is the famous East is East, critically acclaimed for its sensitive and hilarious potrayal of life in London. East is East is a comedy based in Salford, in the 1970s . The story revolves around proud Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan (Om Puri) who lives in a terraced house with his English wife Ella and their seven children. Determined to raise them as traditional Muslims, George sends sons Nazir, Abdul, Tariq, Saleem, Maneer and Sajid to the mosque and makes daughter Meenah dress in saris. The kids rebel, creating a hilarious and often poignant look at children growing up between two cultures.

From the stables of Miramax known for its off beat movies, East is East is directed by Damien O Donnell and stars India s most vibrant theatrical and movie artist- Om Puri.
